Multiplatinum recording artist Moby shows us the many ways in which the nonprofit Institute for Music and Neurologic Function uses music to restore, maintain, and improve people’s physical, emotional, and neurologic functioning.

One particularly inspiring story comes from Nashville’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where a local songwriter named Jenny Plume was hired to create a music therapy program for young patients. The stated aim of the program was to “help patients express their experience through song,” and Plume soon discovered that songwriting provided the best method for the patients in her care. Through their own lyrics and melodies, they could explore their emotions, gain perspective on their situation, and feel more in control. The program proved so effective that it soon drew the attention of a number of country music stars, some of whom agreed to record the children’s songs in Nashville’s recording studios for a professionally produced CD. The excitement of seeing their private thoughts turned into a finished performance by musicians they admired allowed these ill teenagers to forget their grim circumstances temporarily, and to think of themselves as songwriters instead of simply victims of a disease.77
